Mrs. Irene Bennett Reid
Episcopal Supervisor – Retired

Mrs. Irene Bennett Reid attended Spelman College and after moving to Baltimore, Maryland, graduated from Morgan State College (now University) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. She received the Masters in Social Work (MSW) from the University of Pennsylvania.

Her employment was primarily in social services as she sought to enhance the lives of children and their families. Her work in Foster Care and Adoptions, is celebrated.

In 1972, when her husband, Bishop Frank Madison Reid, Jr. was elected and consecrated as the 61st Consecrated Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, they were assigned to the 14th Episcopal District, serving the countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria

She and her husband were then assigned to the 7th District (South Carolina). During that period a highlight of their tenure was her association with Allen University.

In l984, Bishop Reid’s assignment was the 9th Episcopal District (Alabama). Her work included the Women’s Shelter and Transitional Housing Program. In 1989, in the 4th District, Bishop Reid became ill and died.

She is the mother of two children, Kurt Schmoke, Dean Howard University School of Law and Mrs. Karla Reid Young, motivational speaker. She has four grandchildren. Her stepchildren are Rev. Frank M. Reid, III, Mrs. Vanessa Reid-Lewter and Mrs. Stephanie Reid. She has two West African “sons”- Mr. Abu T’imbo and Bishop David R. Daniels.

Her retirement is augmented by volunteer work with the Foster Care Review Board, Board of Black Women’s Agenda and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
